How does the manual image measuring instrument perform scanning wavelength optical measurement? The use of one or more optical power meters in combination with a Tunable Laser Source (TLS) enables optical power versus wavelength measurements. This type of measurement is often used to determine the ratio of the input power to the output power of the device under test, which is called insertion loss and is measured in dB. When the TLS tunes the wavelength within the selected range, the power meter will periodically sample the power at the specified number of measurement points.
    Synchronized to the TLS scan by a trigger signal, these samples can be precisely correlated to the corresponding wavelength. The output of multiport devices such as multiplexers, power splitters, and wavelength switches can be measured simultaneously using multiple power meters.     These "wavelength sweep" routines are very simple to program, using the free 816x plug-and-play driver and enhanced with the measurement capabilities of the N4150A's Optical Fundamentals Library (PFL). The measurement set is connected to the 81610A return loss module after TLS and can also measure light reflection (return loss).

    Built-in wavelength monitoring in these laser sources ensures high wavelength accuracy and repeatability, especially during fast wavelength sweeps. These "wavelength records" data are synchronized with the power meter using a measurement trigger signal. If higher absolute wavelength accuracy is required, offset calibration can be performed through the gas reference signal, and the PFL supports engineers to easily complete the calibration operation.

    InGaAs power detectors are a good tool for this type of measurement due to their extremely small responsivity variation and high sensitivity and wide dynamic range over the single-mode fiber wavelength range (1260-1630nm). The N7744A and N7745A power meters are ideal for these swept wavelength measurements: the fast sampling rate and wide signal bandwidth enable high-resolution measurements while sweeping at high speeds, with no distortion in the measurement trace. Faster data transfer speeds can greatly improve throughput, especially when the number of ports is extremely high.
